When the students are
at the trail they each receive a Starker Forests Trail Passport. This
booklet allows them to answer some fundamental questions as they embark
on their adventure through the forest. There are a wide variety of questions
and pictures allowing them to better understand the importance of the
forest and how it affects them. Presented below are just a some of the
questions from the passport.
Grades K-3
- Identify some broadleaf trees, conifer
trees, and other plants. Which is Oregon's state tree?
- Pick out a tree. Think of yourself
as a forester's helper, learning about the area. List 3 things you would
need to know about your tree. Now list 3 parts of your tree. Name one
way to find out how old a tree is.
- Draw a view
- Choose the tallest person in your
group; that person will be the "big tree". The rest of you
will be "little trees". All the trees need to stand real close
together around the big tree. Carefully stretch out your branches. Choose
3 words to describe how the little trees feel when you are all crowded
together under the big tree. How do you feel when you spread out?
- Think of at least 8 things that you
have used today that came from a tree, write a list or draw them.

Grades 4-6

of 3 things a forest owner/manager needs to know about this tree. Now
list 6 parts of your tree. Name one way to find out how old a tree is.\
- Pick up a Douglas-fir cone and look
at it. Choose 3 words to describe the way it looks. Close your eyes
and feel the cone. Choose 3 words to describe the way it feels.
- Where do you think the seeds are
hidden in the cone? How do you think the seeds are spread?
- How many different kinds would you
predict are inside the hoop? Draw a picture of one. How many animals
or evidence of animals are inside this hoop?
